Michael Gandolfini on Whether He Would Revive Tony Soprano Again

Michael Gandolfini took up the mantle of his late father's most iconic character once already, stepping in as Tony Soprano in the 2021 Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark on HBO. But is he ready to put the character to rest forever?

Catching up with him at the red carpet premiere for Daredevil: Born Again (in which he appears) Entertainment Tonight had to know if he’d ever play Tony again.

“Look, it’s David’s [Chase, creator of The Sopranos],” he told the program. “It’s up to David, ultimately. I know that David’s working on some other things, not Sopranos related, would be exciting.”

Michael said he’d “love” to work with David again but “Tony’s probably set to rest now for good,” while still leaving the door open because “who knows.”

“My guess would be, that character [has] now closed the book on that,” he concluded.

While The Many Saints of Newark received mixed reviews from critics upon release, Michael’s turn as a young Tony Soprano earned acclaim. Indiewire called his performance “brilliant.”

Along with his role in the Disney+ upcoming Daredevil series, the actor will star in Alex Garland’s next film Warfare. He will play Lieutenant McDonald of the Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company.

According to the official Warfare synopsis, the film "embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real-time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.”

Warfare hits theaters on April 11, 2025. Check out the trailer below.
