Jason Statham Action-Comedy Is Suddenly a Hit—10 Years After Its Release
Jason Statham has a new movie arriving in theaters later this month, but it’s a decade-old flick that has his fans buzzing.
Statham, of course, is mainly known as an action star, and one whose characters often have very specific job titles (see: The Beekeeper, The Mechanic, The Transporter). But it’s his role in the 2015 comedy Spy that is currently garnering him the most attention.

As FlixPatrol reports, Spy landed on the list of most-watched movies on Peacock on Monday, March 10. The film, directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and co-starring Melissa McCarthy, nabbed the number 8 spot of the 10 most watched movies, besting Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy—a Peacock exclusive that arrived on February 13 (and came in 10th). I’ll Be Right There, starring Edie Falco, took the ninth spot.
Though it’s hardly the best-known of Statham’s movies, Spy was a box office hit when it arrived in 2015. The film, in which McCarthy plays a CIA analyst/desk drone who, though a series of events, ends up being sent to Paris to track down a nuclear weapon, earned $235,666,219 worldwide on a $65 million budget. Statham plays a world-class spy who can’t wait to watch her fail.
The film boasts an impressive 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes Score, which is the highest rating of any of Statham’s films. As ScreenRant reports, this renewed interest in Spy could bode well for a potential sequel. Following the original film’s success, Feig immediately began working on a sequel, declaring that it was “a world [he didn't] want to walk away from.”
In the meantime, Statham is preparing for the release of David Ayers A Working Man, from a script by Ayer and Sylvester Stallone, which arrives in theaters on March 28. He also has two other sequels in production with The Beekeeper 2 and Fast X: Part 2.
