Terrifying Video Shows Highway Bridge Collapse That Killed One Person
A highway bridge that was set to be demolished collapsed suddenly in Belgium today, killing one person and injuring two. The incident occurred in the southern Belgium town of La Louviere.
Video shows the aftermath of the terrifying tragedy, with the full span of the bridge in the water. Reuters reports that the span fell onto a barge anchored underneath the bridge as part of the demolition project, injuring two men aboard. The body of one worker who was on the bridge when it fell was later recovered.
The bridge, part of a two-part span over the Canal du Centre, was being demolished with a plan to rebuild it next year. Traffic was flowing on the adjacent bridge during the collapse, but was briefly closed by authorities due to safety concerns. The adjacent bridge is now carrying traffic in both directions.
The accident came during a chaotic day for travel in the region. The discovery of a WWII-era bomb buried beneath train tracks in Paris shut down Eurostar service across Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom, as well as local service throughout northern France. Trains are not set to resume until tomorrow, with thousands of passengers stranded in Brussels, Paris, London, and other cities in the region.
