Drummer Zak Starkey Speaks Out After Being Fired by The Who
Zak Starkey has been fired by The Who after nearly three decades.
"The band made a collective decision to part ways with Zak after this round of shows at the Royal Albert Hall,” a representative for the band said in a statement to the Guardian on April 16. "They have nothing but admiration for him and wish him the very best for his future."
Starkey, who is the sun of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, has also spoken out following the news.
"I’m very proud of my near thirty years with The Who," Starkey, 59, said in a statement to Variety.
"They’ve been like family to me. In January, I suffered a serious medical emergency with blood clots in my right bass drum calf. This is now completely healed and does not affect my drumming or running. After playing those songs with the band for so many decades, I’m surprised and saddened anyone would have an issue with my performance that night, but what can you do?" he added.
Starkey told the outlet that he's planning on taking some "much needed time off" to spend with his family.
Starkey also shared an Instagram post about the firing and insinuated that the band members were unhappy with him for "overplaying." Fans took to the comments section of the post to react.
"Overplaying? Ironic given that Keith Moon invented overplaying," one person wrote. Starkey's dad and Moon, The Who's original drummer who died in 1987, were great friends.
"Zak is an amazing drummer. Either this is lies or Roger’s age is affecting him," someone else said, referring to the band's lead singer, Roger Daltrey.
"You’re the nearest Roger will get to a 'Keith Moon Type Drummer'… don’t change your playing for anyone," a third fan added.
Starkey joined The Who in 1996.
