Travis Kelce Reflects on Marijuana Suspension, NFL Draft

Travis and Jason Kelce reflected on their own NFL Draft results while discussing Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders dropping all the way to the fifth round before finally being picked by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 144 overall pick, and one of the brothers had a rocky road of his own.

The brothers and host of The New Heights podcast couldn't fathom how Sanders dropped so far after some mock drafts had him going somewhere in the top 10. In the end, the brothers agree that Sanders going to the Browns will ultimately benefit him, and Sanders will come out swinging with a chip on his shoulder.

The subject also conjured memories about their own NFL Draft day status, with Jason not getting selected until the sixth round with the No. 191 overall pick, and Travis dropping to the third round with the No. 63 overall pick. Jason would soon etch his name in Philadelphia Eagles lore to go along with a Super Bowl win. Ditto for Travis, who is undoubtedly one of the best tight ends in NFL history.

But with such pedigree coming into the NFL Draft in 2013, Jason couldn't believe Travis dropped one round later than predicted. It all stemmed from his marijuana suspension during his sophomore year at the University of Cincinnati.

"The funny thing about Trav is that there was nothing outside of the injuries. I guess you had two things -- you had a few injuries, and then you obviously had the marijuana thing stemming from your sophomore year," Jason recalled.

Travis quipped that Jason saying "marijuana" instead of "weed" sounds "more intense."

"You probably got drafted an entire round later than you should have," Jason continued. "I just think it's funny sometimes, looking back, and there are all these concerns about Travis Kelce, and everybody, whoever knew you, knew you were a great kid. You just had a mess up with weed. And then all of a sudden, teams aren't picking you for it. Think about today. Even back then, 75 percent of NFL players are smoking weed. What the f--k are we talking about? We're gonna act like this is a death sentence?"

"Yeah," Travis chimed in. "We are."
