‘Big Brother’ Fans Want the Key Wheel to Come Back for Season 27

Big Brother fans are reacting to newly released key art for Season 27—and they have one request: “Bring back the key wheel!”

In a teaser post shared to Instagram less than one month before the season premiere, host Julie Chen Moonves was seated in front of a wall of 48 keys. No further clues to the season’s theme were given, but fans were immediately reminded of the long-missing key wheel that used to be part of the nomination ceremonies, no matter what the theme.

The comment section to the post shared by Moonves was filled with fans begging for the return of the clunky wheel, which used to be awkwardly carried downstairs by the Head of Household each week after the keys with the “safe” houseguests' names were inserted into it.

“KEY WHEEL RETURN????” one fan asked in the comments section.

“They are teasing us with a key wheel return I swear,” another agreed.

“Bring back the key wheel!” another begged.

“If you threw all those damn key wheels away,” another warned CBS.

“PLS BRING BACK THE KEY WHEEL🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏,” added another fan, complete with praying hands emoji.

For years, Big Brother fans watched an extended nomination ceremony that started with the HOH saying, “This is the nomination ceremony. One of my duties as Head of Household is to nominate two houseguests for eviction. I will pull the first key. That person is safe. That person will pull the next key, so on and so forth."

The drawn-out process was a nail-biter, and some contestants were forced to pull keys that declared their enemies were safe.

But things changed for the first nomination of season 16 in 2014. That season, the key wheel was replaced with a memory wall that displayed images of the two nominated houseguests.

Fans have been complaining about the switch for years. In a thread on the r/Big Brother subreddit four years ago, a fan wrote, “I miss the key wheel in big brother nomination.”

“We all miss it,” another agreed.

Add Moonves to the list of people who miss the key wheel. In 2022, she told Entertainment Weekly why she enjoyed the ritual. "I loved how each houseguest had to pull one key out to reveal who was the next person given safety," the Big Brother host admitted. "It was like getting an invitation to the ball. The suspense was amazing. I loved that whole ceremony."

In 2023, Moonves even posted a throwback photo of the old school key wheel with the caption, "Do you remember.”

Fans will have to wait to see if the key wheel will be a key part of Big Brother Season 27 when the show returns to CBS on July 10.
