Alaska Airlines Warns Even More Flights Could Be Delayed Due to Tech Issue
Alaska Airlines on Sunday, July 20 grounded all of its flights over a tech issue, but resumed its flights shortly after in the early hours of July 21, 2025.
However, the IT issue that caused the delays for travelers could end up causing more issues in the near future, according to Reuters.
The Washington-based airline with over 300 aircraft shortly after resuming flights announced the failure of a critical piece of hardware at its data center that caused the original groundings could continue to cause problems.
The failure originally caused Alaska Airlines to ground all its flights for about three hours.
"We are currently experiencing an IT outage that's impacting our operations. We requested a temporary, system-wide ground stop until the issue is resolved," the airline posted on X. "We sincerely apologize to our guests for this inconvenience."

Alaska Airlines after announcing the ground stop had been lifted made another post on July 21 stating it was still working on fully restoring its operations.
"We’re working to get our operations back on track today at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air after a significant IT outage Sunday night resulted in a system-wide ground stop of flights," the airline posted. "We appreciate the patience of our guests whose travel plans have been disrupted. We’re working to get them to their destinations as quickly as we can. Before heading to the airport, we encourage flyers to check their flight status."
The airline, founded in 1932, operates a fleet of Boeing and Embraer aircraft, with 238 Boeing 737 jets and 87 smaller Embraer 175 jets, according to the Alaska Airlines website.
The airline's smaller Embraer aircraft are all operated via contract through SkyWest Airlines and Horizon Airlines.
Alaska Airlines also operates five cargo versions of the Boeing 737, though it's unclear if the IT issue impact its freight operations as well.
