Deion Sanders Provides Health Update After Cancer Scare

Deion Sanders delivered both sobering and positive news Monday as his Colorado Buffaloes begin preseason practices.

The college football coach told reporters in Boulder, Col., at a press conference he was treated for bladder cancer in the spring.

As relayed by ESPN college football reporter Adam Rittenberg, his bladder was removed and he declared himself cured.

“I’m truly thankful,” Sanders said while flanked by members of his medical team. “God is so good you have no idea. You have no idea how good God has been to me for me to be here.”

Dr. Janet Kukreja confirmed Sanders is on the road to recovery.

“Day to day, I think for most patients it becomes just a new way of life, but outlook very good,” Kukreja said. “We’ll just keep him on routine surveillance scans. Other than that, nothing else.”

Sanders has been the head coach of the Buffaloes for the last two seasons.

He arrived in Boulder in December 2022 to much fanfare, both because of his personal celebrity and his unorthodox approach to roster building.

On the latter, Sanders has chosen to concentrate on acquiring players through the the transfer portal much more than high school recruiting.

Prior to coaching at Colorado, Sanders led Jackson State to a 72-6 record and won back to back Southwestern Athletic Conference championships.

He originally made his name as a Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame cornerback

After starring at Florida State, Sanders logged 53 interceptions and won two Super Bowls in 14 seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens.

He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1994 and also spent nine seasons playing Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braces, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants.
