'Extreme' Weather Heading for 3 U.S. States on July 14

The summer months often mean heavy rains and severe weather for parts of the United States. 

Recently, we saw Texas, North Carolina and other areas in the Southern United States hit with serious storms, and Iowa saw its own violent thunderstorms on Friday. Illinois and Missouri were also affected.

This Monday, three more states--North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota--are preparing for possible "severe" weather, according to AccuWeather.com.

"A pattern-changing cold front will collide with very warm and humid air to the south and east promoting daily severe weather risks across the region," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill.

"The severe risk comes just days after severe storms rattled portions of the northern Plains earlier in the week with numerous reports of damaging wind gusts and hail."

According to the AccuWeather alert, the area affected by the possibly extreme weather will "stretch from eastern Wyoming into Minnesota" on Monday.

"A more concentrated zone of storms is anticipated across portions of North Dakota into far northern eastern Minnesota," the alert adds. "Storms will be capable of bringing flash flooding, hail, damaging winds and even a few tornadoes."

As the week goes on, other states may be impacted, like Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado and Kansas, as well as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service, the three most important things to remember in the event of severe weather are "get in, get down and cover up."

• GET IN - If you are outside, get inside. If you're already inside, get as far into the middle of the building as possible.
• GET DOWN - Get underground if possible. If you cannot, go to the lowest floor possible.
• COVER UP - Flying and falling debris are a storm's number one killer. Use pillows, blankets, coats, helmets, etc to cover up and protect your head and body from flying debris.
