John McEnroe is Married to Popular American Singer

When it comes to American tennis, few names are as important and significant as John McEnroe. The former World No. 1 was one of the most prolific players of his era, winning seven Grand Slams as a single player and an additional nine as a men's doubles player.

McEnroe was known for his fiery demeanor on the court, particularly against umpires and officials rather than other players, but he was still a fierce competitor.

Off the court, McEnroe is married to a famous American singer who rose to prominence in the 1980s, just as he did on the tennis court.

McEnroe's wife is singer Patty Smyth, best known for songs like "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" and "Look What Love Has Done."

Smyth and McEnroe met in 1993, and married in 1997. Before marrying Smith, McEnroe had been married to actress Tatum O'Neal. O'Neal and McEnroe had three children together, and Smyth and McEnroe have two.

“His three kids hung onto him like monkeys,” Smyth said of McEnroe, noting that she met him at a Christmas party in Los Angeles in an interview with People. “His sweetness was surprising.”

McEnroe admitted that he "tried in my own pathetic way" to ask Smyth out, but his methods seemed to work. In 1995, they had their first child Anna.

“I went from one kid to five within a year and a half,” Smyth noted, taking in McEnroe's children after issues with their mother's substance problems.

"Their mom had a lot of problems. Keeping an even keel for the kids was a huge adjustment. Being a mom was a full-time job."

As the children grew up, Smyth returned to performing and making music - both on her own and with her band Scandal. The band reunited in the mid 2000s as part of a VH1 reality series, and went on a small tour to promote the series. Scandal would go on to release their first song in nearly 25 years in 2009, the single "Hard For You To Love Me."

Before her marriage to McEnroe, Smyth was married to fellow musician Richard Hell.

McEnroe has been a commentator for various networks, and will reprise that role in a matter of weeks for the final major of the year - the US Open.
