The Best Shark Movie of All-Time, According to Rotten Tomatoes

Every swimmer or surfer dreads the potential of a shark attack, and with good reason. Attacks can be fatal, and those who survive often lose limbs or leave with catastrophic injuries.

The real dangers of sharks are well documented, but they've often been presented as antagonists in films and television shows. Some of the greatest films ever have had sharks at the center, but only one can be crowned as the greatest of all time.

Rotten Tomatoes recently ranked the greatest shark movies ever, and arrived at an unsurprising conclusion for the top spot.

Steven Spielberg's 1975 hit "Jaws" was ranked the No. 1 shark movie of all time, with a 97% critics rating.

"Compelling, well-crafted storytelling and a judicious sense of terror ensure Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' has remained a benchmark in the art of delivering modern blockbuster thrills," the website said.

Roger Ebert, one of the greatest film critics of all time, praised "Jaws" in his 1975 review, acknowledging even then that it was a rare film when compared to other works from the time.

"'Jaws' is a great adventure movie of the kind we don’t get very often any more. It’s clean-cut adventure, without the gratuitous violence of so many action pictures," Ebert said.

"It has the necessary amount of blood and guts to work — but none extra. And it’s one hell of a good story, brilliantly told."

The No. 2 film is a completely different kind of movie - a documentary titled "Playing With Sharks." The film focuses on scuba diver and shark conservationist Valerie Taylor, who swims with sharks and studies them around Australia.

Rotten Tomatoes referred to the film as "a fascinating tribute to a pioneer as well as an engrossing act of environmental advocacy."

The No. 3 spot goes to the recently released "Dangerous Animals," a horror film starring Jai Courtney. The film follows a surfer who is held captive by a serial killer who feeds his victims to sharks.

The film has an 86% rating among critics on the website, and a strong 74% rating with audiences.

Films about sharks come in a variety of genres, but it's clear that sometimes it's hard to beat a classic.
