Former World Series MVP, MLB Wins Leader Dies at 85
Mickey Lolich, a three-time MLB All-Star and 1968 World Series MVP for the Detroit Tigers, has passed away. He was 85.
The Tigers confirmed Lolich's death in a statement released on social media. The Portland, Ore. native played for the franchise from 1963-75.
"The Tigers are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mickey Lolich and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones," the statement reads.
Mickey Lolich was a Motor City legend
A lefthander hurler, Lolich debuted for the Tigers at age 22. In 13 years with the team, he won 207 regular season games and made three American League All-Star squads.
Lolich's best individual season was 1971, when he led Major League Baseball in wins (25), starts (45) and complete games (29) while finishing second for the Cy Young Award and fifth in MVP voting.
In 1968, Lolich went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA in three complete games against the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, earning MVP honors and leading the team to a championship.
"Lolich will be remembered as one of the most durable and dominant left-handed pitchers of his era and a cornerstone of Detroit’s pitching staff for more than a decade," the Tigers said.
After leaving Detroit, Lolich pitched for the New York Mets (1976) and San Diego Padres (1978-79) before retiring at age 39.
Lolich's former teammate also pays tribute
Outfielder Willie Horton, who played alongside Lolich during his 13 seasons with the Tigers, shared his thoughts on his former teammate's passing with MLB.com.
"Lolich was a great pitcher, teammate and champion, but he was more than that to me," said Horton. "He was like a brother for over 60 years. I will keep the memories close to my heart and will never forget the close bond we shared. My condolences to [widow] Joyce and their family and to everyone who loved him."
Lolich is survived by Joyce, his wife of 61 years, daughters Kimberly, Stacy, and Jody and three grandsons.
