Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' to End 20-Year Aircraft Streak
Christopher Nolan is one of the great pillars of the 21st century film industry. The English director has created numerous iconic classics like his Batman trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, to just name a few.
His most recent film, Oppenheimer, serves as a true testament of Nolan’s status and love from audiences. The 3-hour-long, R-rated biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, grossed just short of a billion dollars ($975M). Oppenheimer is the highest-grossing World War II-related film and the highest-grossing biographical film of all time.

Hitting theaters this summer, Nolan will tackle a tale actually as old as time, Homer’s The Odyssey. Fans were surprised to hear that the renowned director would be helming this story, as it is a big departure from his past work.
Nolan is a filmmaker who has portrayed sci-fi elements in his movies before, like the manipulation of time in Tenet or dreams in Inception, but he is known for keeping an extremely grounded tone. Elements that aren’t possible today, but surrounded by such realism and explained in a way that make them plausible in our reality. Nolan’s approach to the Batman mythos was famously attempting to take the superhero and create a version of his story that could happen in real life.
The Odyssey will see Nolan embrace fantasy like audiences have never seen before. Moviegoers are excited to see how the director, who believes in hyperrealism, will portray ancient gods and monsters. Upon the announcement of The Odyssey, fans jokingly speculated online where the director, who famously avoids CGI in his films, would find a real cyclops and a six-headed sea monster.

Nolan’s extreme realism isn’t the only thing coming to an end with his latest release. He will also break a streak that his movies have held for 20 years.
When The Odyssey releases, it will be the first Christopher Nolan film since The Prestige in 2006 that will not feature an aircraft, as pointed out by X user @SaveYourCinema. That is unless he makes a big change to the source material.

Nolan’s films have always had a deep connection to time as a theme and plot device, but aircraft have always played important roles in impactful moments until now.
The Odyssey from Christopher Nolan, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Anne Hathaway, releases only in theaters on July 17, 2026.
