Nick Cannon’s Dating 'Double Standard’ for His Kids Goes Viral

Nick Cannon has very different rules when it comes to the dating lives of his two teen children with ex-wife Mariah Carey. And those rules have since gone viral.

Cannon made his eyebrow-raising comments during a recent interview with The TMZ Podcast, on which he was asked about his 15-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, entering the dating world.

The twins are two of the TV host’s 12 children with six different women, including Carey, Brittany Bell, Abby De La Rosa, Bre Tiesi, LaNisha Cole.

In addition to his two kids with Mariah, he’s also dad to Golden, Powerful, Zion, Zillion, Legendary, Onyx, Rise, Beautiful, and Halo. His son Zen, whom he shared with Alyssa Scott, died of cancer in 2021.

Cannon’s Questionable Dating Comments

“My son’s been dating, and I’ve allowed it. I’ve encouraged it,” Cannon said on the podcast. When asked whether his daughter Monroe has been given the same freedom, he added, “Absolutely not.”

“It’s absolutely a double standard,” Cannon admitted, before explaining why he treats them differently.

“But there is a difference when parenting a son and then when parenting a daughter,” he continued. “I'm more protective of my daughter, because there’s things I have to protect my daughter from. There are certain types of individuals that you want ot keep your daughter away from. My son, it's a different conversation.”

“If some man puts his hands on my daughter, I’m going to jail. I’m doing 25-to-life if somebody puts their hands on my daughter,” he continued.

When asked when she is allowed to date, he said the pair made a “deal.”

“If she can explain to me what’s going to happen on these dates, then she can go,” he said, adding, “Your twin brother can go with you. You’re not going one-on-one with with no little bastard, anywhere.”

“I’m preparing her for college, and I know it’s out of my control. I can’t do nothing about it ... even though I'm apprehensive, if we can have a conversation about it, I'm for it,” Cannon concluded. “I know when you get to college, I want you to have all the questions answered and whatever and you make the best decisions possible. So, I know that’s around the corner. I don’t need anything to happen before that, like that scares me.”

Reaction to Cannon’s Comments

Nick’s commentary certainly got people talking, with TMZ’s video going viral all over social media. Many viewers criticized Cannon’s self-admitted double standard, with most of them making some version of the same comment in the replies.

“It's amazing how he sits there and says he's trying to keep his daughter from certain types of elements out there. He is the element...lol,” joked one viewer.

“He’s scared she’ll end up with another him. Terrifying thought I’m sure,” read another popular response.

“Protecting your daughter from things that you’re encouraging your son to do???” asked one viewer, as another said that “asking a guy with 12 baby mamas about parenting is wild.”

Many others joked that “he's telling nobody what to do in Mariah's household 😂”

There were a few followers who were on his side, however.

“I understand him. parenting a teenage boy is entirely DIFFERENT than a teenage girl,” read one response.

“He’s right though. There’s a difference in raising a son and a daughter,” added another. “I wouldn’t let my daughter leaves with a car full of male friends… But I don’t feel the same about my son leaving in a car full of female friends. REALLY THINK ABOUT IT AND IM SURE YOU’LL FEEL THE SAME!”
