Technology Tried To Replicate Michael Jackson and Failed Spectacularly

As the world continues to revisit the legacy of Michael Jackson, with the Michaelbiopic continuing to perform big at the box office and his catalog doing phenomenal numbers on global music charts, the world again has “Jacksonmania.” It appears that even robotics engineers are getting in on the action.

During the week of May 18, a video began circulating on social media of a humanoid (robot) in a white t-shirt dancing across a stage to Jackson’s biggest hit song, “Billie Jean.” Although the developers were likely hoping the robot’s performance would wow the audience, that’s not what happened at all.

Outside of his singing abilities and extensive chart-topping catalog of music, Jackson was known to be one of the best dancing entertainers of all time. There was a certain unparalleled fluidity and precision about his moves. Well, despite all of the science and technology in the world, his talent and skill set are things that just can’t be duplicated with things like codes, programming, and computers.

When the robot programmed to dance to “Billie Jean” took to the stage, it started out by gliding to the center. However, when it spun around, the feet of the robot hit the stage, and it stumbled. Eventually, the robot caught its balance and continued to dance, only to again trip on the stage. This time, it fell and didn’t get up. It took its programmer to come out and drag it away. Check out the clip of the performance below.
