Ted Turner was Jane Fonda’s “Favorite Ex-Husband”. Plus the Reason for their Divorce

On May 6, the sad news was announced that media mogul Ted Turner died at the age of 87. His passing comes on the heels of his 2018 announcement that he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, a progressive and irreversible, fatal neurodegenerative disease. Turner leaves behind 5 children and a legacy of revolutionizing television news, creating CNN, the first 24-hour news channel. He will also be remembered as owning three Atlanta-based professional sports teams, developing other TV networks like TNT and TBS, and his years of philanthropy. Adding to his rich history is his whirlwind romance with Academy Award-winning actress Jane Fonda.

Ted Turner and Jane Fonda Got Married in 1991

The media pioneer and the Grace and Frankie actress kicked off their romance back in 1990, although, as Peoplereports, Fonda wasn’t so “keen” to entertain Turner after he got her number and called to request a date. However, he eventually won her over with his charm. In fact, when she was once asked about her love for Turner, Fonda told People that she loved him because he “can keep up with me.” She further noted, “He’s [Turner] a very, very funny, lovable, complicated person.”

The two got married on December 21, 1991, and blended their families, having a total of eight children between them from previous relationships. Over the course of Turner and Fonda’s ten-year marriage, they would not have a child with each other. By the way, watch this clip of Fonda describing what made her start to fall for Turner.

Sadly, the couple wasn’t meant to stay in a marital relationship, divorcing in May 2001. In her memoir, My Life So Far, she mentioned problems in her marriage to Turner, noting infidelity. She also insinuated that her ultimate decision to convert to Christianity drove them apart. Now, according to Turner’s 2008 memoir Call Me Ted, he was “upset” when Fonda converted to Christianity, not because of the conversion itself, but because she allegedly didn’t talk to him about it. When it comes to the legal divorce paperwork, they agreed their marriage was “irretrievably broken.”

Jane Fonda and Ted Turner Remained Friends

Fonda would later share in interviews with People that Turner was her “favorite ex-husband,” and in 2008 said, “I still have a very good relationship [with him].” And again, referring to Turner’s memoir, he confirmed that after the divorce, the two of them remained good friends. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that Fonda credits Turner with helping her find her sense of humor. Take a look.
