Winter Storm Watch Issued in Wyoming as 16 Inches of Heavy Snow, 45 mph Winds Expected
It's now May, and spring is in full swing throughout the United States. However, there are certain areas around the country that still have to be concerned with snow.
Already, the National Weather Service (NWS) has announced a Winter Storm Watch for one state beginning Monday.
What is a Winter Storm Watch?
"Normally, a Winter Storm Watch will be issued in advance of the storm (usually at least 24 hours)," says the NWS definition. "It indicates the risk of a hazardous winter weather event has increased (at least a 50% chance of it occurring), but its occurrence, location, and/or timing is still uncertain. It is intended to provide enough lead time so you can make plans to stay safe."
In this case, the NWS has put out a Winter Storm Watch for specific mountain regions of Wyoming from Monday evening through Wednesday morning.
What to know
The areas covered by the NWS alert include:
- The north Snowy Range Foothills including the cities of Arlington and Elk Mountain along Interstate 80
- The Snowy Range including the cities of Centennial and Albany
- The south Laramie Range and south Laramie Range Foothills, including the cities of Buford, Federal, Horse Creek, Pumpkin Vine, Vedauwoo and Whitaker
Heavy snow as possible--between 4-to-10 inches in some parts and up to 16 inches above 9000 ft in elevation--along with 45 mph winds. Falling or blowing snow may cause dangerous road conditions, limiting travel.
"Outdoor recreation could become dangerous to those caught unprepared for hazardous winter conditions," the NWS says. "Hunters, hikers, and snowmobilers may become disoriented and lost due to low visibility in falling and blowing snow."
