X Announces New 'Limits' For Free Users
Unverified users who use the social media app X will now have some new limitations placed on their accounts, the company announced on Monday.
The company claims that the limits are designed to "alleviate some of the strain on the behind-the-scenes part of X and reduce downtime and error pages." The limits will apply to all unverified users on the app – those without the blue "verified" check mark next to their username.
X Announces New Limitations
On Monday, X officially announced new "technical limits" for unverified users, placing limits on direct messages, posts, replies, and follows.
Here is X's explanation of those limits:
- Direct Messages (daily): The limit is 500 messages sent per day.
- Posts: 50 original posts and 200 replies per day for unverified accounts. The daily update limit is further broken down into smaller limits for semi-hourly intervals.
- Changes to account email: 4 per hour.
- Following (daily): The technical follow limit is 400 per day. Please note that this is a technical account limit only, and there are additional rules prohibiting aggressive following behavior.
- Following (account-based): Once an account is following 5,000 other accounts, additional follow attempts are limited by account-specific ratios.
X also revealed that API requests from all third-party applications are tracked against the hourly API limit, which means that users who use multiple third-party applications with their account will reach the API limit more quickly.
What if You Hit A Limit?
Some unverified users who use the app heavily could be hit with these limits. If that happens, X advises users to simply wait until the time limit has elapsed.
"If you do reach a limit, we'll let you know with an error message telling you which limit you've hit. For limits that are time-based (like the Direct Messages, posts, changes to account email, and API request limits), you'll be able to try again after the time limit has elapsed," X wrote in its help guide.
"The post limit of 2,400 updates per day is further broken down into semi-hourly intervals. If you hit your account update/post limit, please try again in a few hours after the limit period has elapsed," the guide continued.
Of course, the way to avoid these limitations entirely would be to subscribe to X's premium service, becoming "verified" on the platform.
