Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Gets First Rotten Tomatoes Score
Few filmmakers bring movie lovers to theaters in droves quite like Christopher Nolan. The critically acclaimed writer-director's catalog features films that are, quite literally, events. And now, three years after the box-office success of Oppenheimer (Barbenheimer, anyone?), Nolan's next star-studded flick is poised to take the theater circuit by storm.
The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer's Greek epic of the same name. It follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he "embarks on a perilous journey to return home after the Trojan War."
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Samantha Morton as Circe, Elliot Page as Sinon, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Mia Goth as Melantho, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, and John Leguizamo as Eumaeus. Nolan directed from his own screenplay. Filming took place from February to August 2025 on a $250 million budget.
The review embargo for The Odyssey has officially lifted, and the action epic now has its first Rotten Tomatoes score. Surprising no one, it's a certified fresh hit, sitting pretty at 98% with 132 reviews on the Tomatometer. RogerEbert.com hails the film as a cinematic feat—"mightily impressive for its scale, the graceful way it moves from one time period to another, and for the tactility of its imagery."
Variety praises it for its sensory experience: "We leave it feeling that we've been to hell and back, and exhilaratingly so." The Hollywood Reporter notes that The Odyssey is "elevated by the blindingly charismatic ensemble."
The Odyssey had its world premiere on July 6 at Empire, Leicester Square, with a wide release slated for July 17 in the United States and the United Kingdom.
