Exclusive: 'The Agency' Star John Magaro Gives a Hopeful Update About Season 3
The Agency Season 2 is hands-down the best action-espionage TV show of 2026. If you’ve slept on this fantastic series, now is the time to catch up. The season wrapped on a massive cliffhanger. In a brief conversation with Men's Journal, John Magaro dives into his hopes for the continuation of The Agency, what makes his character, Owen, so likable, and why the show is kind of like the un-funny version of The Office.Spoilers ahead.
After 10 tightly plotted episodes, The Agency Season 2 ended with Martian (Michael Fassbender) getting captured, despite everyone thinking he died in an explosion that also took out the terrorist cell known as Valhalla. Martian is alive, and although he betrayed his colleagues in the CIA in order to free his lover, Sami Zahir (Jodie Turner-Smith), Martian ended up, in theory, doing the right thing. And, one of his biggest supporters in the agency itself, Owen (Magaro), still seems to believe in Martian, even after everything.
"I think, in the end, I don't know how much Owen really knows about Martian," actor John Magaro says. "He's so trusting in a way. Owen is still like, 'Martian can't be doing something that bad.' The curtain is being lifted for him a bit."
Will The Agency Return for Season 3?
"I really would love to go back for Season 3," Magaro says. "And I think with the way it ended, you really need that." A third chapter hasn't officially been greenlit. A return feels likely, but nothing is locked in just yet.
Owen: The Agency’s Relatable "Everyman"
In Season 1, Owen was a handler, working only in the office of the London CIA branch. But in Season 2, he goes out into the field, doing undercover work, which results in disaster. Part of what makes The Agency so great is that, as played by Magaro, Owen is a down-to-earth guy who represents not just a super cool agent, but a very believable person, as though the average audience member was suddenly thrust into international espionage.
"This guy could be anyone you know," Magaro says. "He's like a normal guy from your suburban neighborhood who happened to get into the CIA because he's a patriot or whatever, and thought it would be intriguing work. But of course, he bites off more than he can chew, and doesn't really know what he's involved in."
Owen is very much in over his head midway through the season, and though he survives getting his cover blown, he does lose a leg in the process. When he returns to the office, there's even a funny welcome-back party, with very ordinary decorations and a cake for him. And it's in these quirky but relatable details, as well as his office romance with Blair (Ambreen Razia), that Magaro thinks the series is very special.
"There are all these ridiculous decorations you wouldn't get at a set like Jack Ryan or a James Bond movie. They're like eating this terrible sheet cake from Costco," Magaro points out. "It's just so brilliantly American in a way. It's like the serious version of The Office."
Finding Humanity (and Love) in a Spy Thriller
Like The Office, The Agency has some office romances, and Blair and Owen are a bit like Jim and Pam (or Tim and Dawn if you're a purist). This romance provides some tenderness to the last few episodes and is part of what gives the writing of The Agency its humanity and charm. "The relationship between Ambreen and me was something we discovered in the first season, and now they've expanded that relationship," Magaro says. "I haven't watched the French series we're based on—Le Bureau—but I know my character is very different there. We consciously wanted Owen to be a sweeter and more of a guy next door."
Again, whether or not we'll get a third season of the show isn't clear right now. The Agency is written by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, and Jez is also the showrunner of MobLand, another great series on Paramount+. Now, because MobLand is a hit, could The Agency Season 3 still happen? The cast is massive, and the show is great, but it seems like at this point, the fans need to be vocal.
"I know most of the cast would want to do a Season 3," Magaro says. "We all really enjoy working with each other. I don't think I've ever been part of a television cast that's so stellar. I hope we hear soon because I know people hate to wait three years before they see the next season. So, if you want to see more of The Agency, what I can tell people who read this is: Go online and let Paramount know you want to see a Season 3!"
