Fan Vote Declares 'Firefly' the 'Best Sci-Fi Show of All Time' 23 Years After Its Premiere
Throughout television history, there have been several hit sci-fi shows, including The X-Files, Stranger Things, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, and several Star Trek titles. According to a fan-vote ranking, one short-lived series from the early 2000s surpasses them all as the greatest sci-fi show ever produced.

In June 2026, Ranker updated its article that allows users to vote on the "Best Sci-Fi Shows of All Time." Based on the votes from the kind of fans who would be invested enough to seek out the article, Firefly was ranked at No. 1 by a wide margin. Currently, Firefly sits at the top with 25,922 upvotes and 11,464 downvotes. It is followed by Star Trek: The Next Generation in the second spot with 20,009 upvotes and 9,522 downvotes. While those figures will change since people can still vote on the ranking, Firefly has a massive lead.
The show was seemingly always doomed due to baffling Fox broadcast decisions. The network aired Firefly episodes out of order and didn't even bother to release them all before canceling it. Still, the 14-episode series managed to attract an incredibly passionate fan following, and it became a massive success on home media. Ultimately, the post-cancellation embrace from fans resulted in the movie sequel Serenity being greenlit.
Often described as a sci-fi space-western, Firefly takes place in the distant future. The series' story follows the crew of a small transport ship as they dodge a slew of dangers and eke out a living in a universe ruled by an authoritarian group.
There are several reasons why Firefly is considered so iconic more than 23 years after it premiered on September 20, 2002. The biggest factor in the show being considered a masterpiece is how beloved its characters are individually and as a ragtag group.
Many fans also love the show's witty dialogue and the way the world of the series truly feels lived-in, which is an element that the vast majority of sci-fi films and series get wrong. Finally, the underdog element almost certainly plays a role in Firefly's legacy. After all, there is no doubt that it is appealing to root for a show that virtually everyone agrees deserved better from the network.
