Glen Powell's Next Movie Role Announced — Sports Fans Will Love It

After working together on Everybody Wants Some!! and Hit Man, Glen Powell and director Richard Linklater are joining forces once again.

In an untitled film from Universal, it was announced this week that Powell is set to portray New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig in an upcoming biopic, according to Deadline.

There is currently no scheduled start date for production. However, the project is expected to be produced by lifelong Yankees fan Lorne Michaels and Erin David of Broadway Video, with Powell also producing alongside Dan Cohen through his production company Barnstorm. Linklater is also in talks to produce through Detour Filmproduction.

The Story of Lou Gehrig

Gehrig remains one of the most iconic athletes in sports history. He recorded 2,721 hits, 493 home runs, and spent all 17 of his MLB seasons with the Yankees winning six World Series.

His career was cut short in 1939 when he retired after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that became widely known as "Lou Gehrig's disease."

That same year, Gehrig delivered one of the most iconic speeches in sports history on July 4, declaring himself at Yankee Stadium to be "the luckiest man on the face of the earth" as he accepted the end of his playing career.

Unfortunately, just two years later, Gehrig passed away on June 2, 1941, at the age of 37. Since then, MLB has recognized June 2 as "Lou Gehrig Day" annually to raise awareness for ALS, a disease that still has no cure.

Gehrig's story remains one of the most well-known in sports history, but it has only been brought to the big screen once in a major way through the 1942 drama The Pride of the Yankees, which starred Gary Cooper as Gehrig.

This creates a major opportunity for Powell and the entire production team to tell Gehrig's story for a modern audience while showcasing the impact he had both on and off the field.
