Marvel's 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Gets First Rotten Tomatoes Score

It's a brand new day for Spider-Man (sorry, I had to). The latest installment in the Marvel franchise swings into theaters this week, with Tom Holland reprising his role as the titular web-slinging hero after almost five years.

For the uninitiated, here's a synopsis for Spider-Man: Brand New Day per Marvel:

"It's a brand new day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves—a powerful villain no one can even see."

In addition to Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, the movie stars Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher, Sadie Sink (in an unknown, oft-theorized role), Liza Colón-Zayas as Detective Jean DeWolff, Tramell Tillman as William "Bill" Metzger, Marvin Jones III as Tombstone, and Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion. Zabryna Guevara also reprises her role as Mayor Sheila Riviera from Daredevil: Born Again. Destin Daniel Cretton directed from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Today, the review embargo has lifted for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the film now has its first Rotten Tomatoes score. As of writing, the superhero flick sits at 89% on the review aggregator's Tomatometer with 107 reviews. It has the Certified Fresh badge.

Despite the relatively high Rotten Tomatoes score, reviews for Brand New Day are mixed. IndieWirecalls it "a dull and downbeat sequel," while A.V. Clublauds Marvel for orchestrating its "best crossover in ages." Deadlinepraises the movie for "forging a challenging path forward" in a "dark and thrilling new chapter." Inversenotes that it "delivers the refreshing reset Marvel needed." However, Rolling Stonestates that it's the "same old MCU B.S."
