Regular Men’s Journal readers may recall that we named the regular Cloudsurfer 2 as the best On running shoe of the 2025 season, favoring it for its “pillowy cushioning and buttery smooth transitions” while also complementing the shoe’s high durability, which is always at least somewhat surprising considering On’s midsole gaps look like they were designed by a Poly Bridge 3 player. But this bridge-like "CloudTec" midsole design, as On calls it, really does provide excellent shock absorption.

The differences for the Trail 2 version of the Cloudsurfer are small but vital. Each shoe’s bottom now uses On’s Missiongrip rubber sole, providing an updated lug pattern to grip better into shifting trail surfaces. Meanwhile, the upper has been reformulated for increased abrasion resistance, so it won’t die after an encounter with a thicket.
