65 Years Ago Today: One of the Greatest Country Songs of All Time Was Recorded

The legendary Patsy Cline died before the music world could truly come to know her brilliance when she died in a plane crash in March 1963.

Just two years earlier, though, the iconic singer suffered near-fatal injuries in a car accident that saw her still on crutches when she recorded what would become her biggest hit and one of the greatest country songs of all time.

Crazy became an immediate success for Cline, who belted out the lyrics penned by country legend Willie Nelson. The song hit No. 2 on the Billboard country charts and crossed over into the pop charts, reaching as high as No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It wasn’t only a hit for Cline, though, as it revealed to Nelson his true gift.

“‘Crazy’ is as crazy does,” Nelson wrote in his 2023 book Energy Follows Thought: The Stories Behind My Songs. “And this particular ‘Crazy’ convinced me, at a time when I wasn’t a hundred percent sure of my writing talent, that I’d be crazy to stop writing.”

Billboard ranked it at No. 2 on its list of the greatest country songs of all time behind only Dolly Parton’s Jolene.

“Listening to Cline unspool fresh heartbreak in the classic country standard from 1961 is particularly devastating because of its distinctly self-effacing tone … Written by Willie Nelson, Crazy not only accepts defeat but internalizes and embraces it,” Billboard wrote.

“Her steadying vocal often lingers on the last syllable of some of the track’s most poignant lyrics — and when it combines to guide the woeful backing piano, Cline’s resignation feels keenly human in a painfully familiar sense, which has helped the song ring true so many decades later.”

Rolling Stone ranked the iconic hit at No. 3 on its own list of the greatest country songs of all time, behind Jolene and Johnny Cash’s I Walk the Line.
