Bill Belichick’s Son Abruptly Resigns From UNC After Football Investigation

North Carolina’s investigation into its football program ended Thursday with a major departure: Steve Belichick, defensive coordinator and son of head coach Bill Belichick, has resigned. His resignation becomes effective Oct. 27, when his medical leave ends, according to UNC’s announcement reported by the Associated Press.

The bigger development for Bill Belichick is what UNC says investigators found—and the shrinking circle around him. Steve is the second prominent member of the coach’s original UNC operation to leave this month, after general manager Michael Lombardi resigned Sept. 3. The university now considers its investigation resolved, Reuters reports.

What UNC’s Investigation Found

The university said its review examined allegations involving the culture and climate of Carolina football and concluded that “certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct,” according to UNC’s statement.

But the school made an important distinction about the scope of its findings.

“The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure,” UNC said.

The university did not publicly specify what those actions were or attribute particular findings to Steve Belichick. That distinction matters because earlier reporting described questions investigators were asking about members of the program, but UNC’s final announcement did not publicly substantiate individual allegations.

“All necessary corrective actions are now underway,” the university said, with Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel overseeing them.

Bill Belichick’s Staff Looks Very Different

Steve Belichick had been away from the team on medical leave since Aug. 6. Instead of returning, his tenure in Chapel Hill will end next month.

Before joining his father at UNC, Steve spent 2024 as Washington’s defensive coordinator after 12 seasons on the New England Patriots’ defensive staff. He served as the Patriots’ defensive play caller from 2020 through 2023, according to his official UNC biography.

Now Bill Belichick is moving forward without two major figures from the operation he assembled in Chapel Hill.

UNC, meanwhile, has publicly maintained its support for the head coach. When Lombardi resigned earlier this month, university spokesperson Dean Stoyer said the school “continues to support Bill Belichick and the Carolina football program,” according to the Associated Press.
