The Internet Just Learned About a Crazy Super Mario Hack You Need to See to Believe

It’s-a-me, Mario!

The internet is going crazy after learning a cheat of sorts that makes game play in Super Mario a little bit easier.

On Sept. 1, an X user uploaded a video of Mario retrieving a mushroom that had fallen down into the abyss. The crazy part is that the player jumped up into the sky to get the mushroom, which made him bigger.

“Mushrooms that fall into holes can be picked from above,” the X user captioned the post.

Several X users reported trying out the nifty trick and said that it worked—though Men’s Journal cannot independently verify this information. Now, Nintendo players of all ages are reacting to the video, many left surprised by the trick.

“This information was not in the Nintendo book,” one person wrote.

“Why did no one tell me this critical info,” someone else wondered.

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?! This would’ve made ALL the difference back in the day,” a third comment read.

“Not 40 years too late for me. I play this every time I take my kids to the local arcade. Definitely will be trying this,” another X user added.

The reaction is perhaps unsurprising given just how long the Super Mario franchise has been a part of gamers’ lives. The original Super Mario Bros. was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, introducing players to the now-iconic plumber as he made his way through the Mushroom Kingdom. Since then, Mario has become one of the most recognizable characters in video game history, with countless games released across Nintendo’s various consoles.

That longevity also means there are plenty of players who have spent decades working their way through Mario’s levels. For some, discovering a trick like this after all these years is almost as surprising as finding a secret level they never knew existed. And because the video is so simple, it’s easy for curious players to see whether they can recreate the hack themselves.

Of course, whether this particular trick works consistently may depend on the game being played and the circumstances surrounding the mushroom’s fall. For now, though, the viral video has clearly given Mario fans something new to talk about—and perhaps a reason to dust off an old favorite and start playing again.
