This Duo Just Announced Their First Tour in 18 Years

Some songs belong to an era. “Crazy” somehow escaped its own.

Gnarls Barkley released it in 2006, back when ringtones cost real money, and your iPod probably held less than what’s in your pocket now.

Then CeeLo Green started singing that opening line.

You know the one.

Twenty years later, the Grammy-winning duo of Green and producer Danger Mouse is giving everybody who remembers that moment a reason to dig through the back of the closet for whatever they were wearing in 2006.

Gnarls Barkley has announced the To Whom It Still Concerns Tour, its first run in 18 years.

The nine-city North American trek begins Nov. 5 at The Masonic in San Francisco before stops in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Detroit, Boston, Silver Spring, Toronto and New York. It wraps up Nov. 28 at the House of Blues in Chicago.

And there’s an Atlanta homecoming in the middle of it.

Green and Danger Mouse play the Coca-Cola Roxy on Nov. 10, bringing Gnarls Barkley back to the city that now bears the name of the duo’s third album.

The tour follows the March release of Atlanta, their first full-length since 2008’s The Odd Couple. The duo has called the record its third and final album, which gives this run more weight than the usual reunion lap.

This isn’t two artists dusting off a catalog because somebody found an old festival poster.

Gnarls Barkley had one of those wonderfully strange runs where nothing sounded quite like them. Green had already put Atlanta on the map with Goodie Mob. Danger Mouse was becoming one of music’s most adventurous producers. Together they made soul, hip-hop, rock and psychedelia sound like they’d been sharing an apartment the whole time.

Then came “Crazy.”

The song became a global hit and earned Gnarls Barkley a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, while their debut album, St. Elsewhere, took Best Alternative Music Album. Rolling Stone later named “Crazy” the No. 1 song of the 2000s.

But the trophies aren’t the best evidence of what the song became.

Play those opening notes in a room full of people who were adults, or trying hard to become adults, in 2006 and watch what happens.

Recognition arrives almost immediately.

For many fans, that’s the pitch: a chance to revisit a piece of their own soundtrack.

“These songs are the silver lining to an otherwise sad story,” Green said in a statement. “Come, and let’s celebrate together the beautiful madness of it all.”

Eighteen years later, the madness still has some business to attend to.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Thursday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. local time, with Citi and Spotify presales starting earlier in the week.
