'Final Fantasy 7 Revelation' Director Addresses The Most Controversial Part of the Game

Square Enix had a big 2026, with the release of Nintendo Switch 2 ports of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, The Adventures of Elliot, as well as the upcoming release of Final Fantasy Resonance in a few weeks. 2027 is shaping up to be even bigger with Final Fantasy 14: Evercold, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and Kingdom Hearts 4.

The hype train for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has left the station and director Naoki Hamaguchi has given an extensive amount of news about the game. After initial public demos, Hamaguchi is finally addressing one of the biggest complaints about Revelation‘s early playtesting.

In an interview with Indy100, Hamaguchi stated that while there are no plans to eliminate the amount of guidance that Chadley and Mai provide the player, there will indeed be options to reduce or maybe remove their hand-holding.

“I do completely understand that for people who are used to playing a lot of games, particularly influencers and people from the media, they may find the guidance from Chadley and MAI a little overbearing, so in the final game there will be options to customize how much guidance is provided; you can have it at the level that best suits you,” said Hamaguchi.

The single biggest online complaint about Revelation was Mai interrupting players every few moments whenever the player explored a new region or made a new discovery.

Revelation is aiming to not be too overbearing for hardcore open-world and JRPG players, while also providing additional guidance for more casual players.

“We wanted to be mindful that guidance was available for players who might need it. I have seen comments after that information came out where people were saying, ‘that’s matching too much to those people who want it to be easy,’ but that has always been the underlying concept behind Rebirth and Revelation,” said Hamaguchi.

“I’m not planning on moving away from that.”

Hamaguchi also added that he hopes players aren’t too mean to Chadley or Mai or their fans, as both characters have been the center of plenty of online discourse for the FF7 Remake Trilogy.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
