Gary Vaynerchuk Issues Must-Hear Warning to Sports Collectors as Market Heats Up

The endless churn of hunting down valuable collectibles could seem like quite the arduous task for the uninitiated.

Luckily for beginners who want to try their luck out in acquiring the most valuable/their favorite piece on the market, there is some advice coming their way.

Gary Vaynerchuk, a mogul in the realm of collectibles and a garage-sale aficionado, took to his Instagram to lay out a few helpful insights on when the perfect time to start collecting would be.

In a reel he posted on August 20 to his Instagram, ‘GaryVee’ revealed that, during “hot moments” in the collectibles space, people tend to get “intoxicated by the paper”. This was him hinting toward buyers being solely motivated by the upward trajectory of cash flow.

“The game of collectibles, which I’ve been in for 40 years, requires discipline. When it’s super hot, stash a little cash to the side. Don’t think the good times are always going to roll. When it’s quiet, when no one’s talking about it? That’s the time to strike.”

The old “buy low, sell high” mantra is what Vaynerchuk is essentially preaching here. While it does seem obvious to always use this supposed tactic, it’s quite difficult to enforce.

Collectibles and their values are in a constant state of flux. What was once valued in the millions may become a relic of the past the following year.

Beanie Babies are a perfect example of this. After being mass-produced and then being marketed as a ‘collectible’, they eventually lost their sheen, and the bubble burst in that space.

Gary Vee Wants People To Bet On What’s Already Proven Itself

“I’m in the cut, waiting for all of this heat to get caught, and then I’m going to go buy my [expletive],” continued Gary. “People downstairs are taking very high-risk moves because they want the high upside.”

“You could buy Patrick Mahomes, who’s already done it. Listen to me, be disciplined. Be smart. It’s always okay to have 20% fun, take a risk. You’re a big [expletive] Utah Jazz fan, and you want to shoot your load on Keyonte George… he’s not guaranteed. He could get hurt. Look what happened to Derrick Rose.”

There is no sure bet when it comes to collectibles and their worth. While there are some basic principles that dictate where the market will shift, such as oversaturation or, quite simply, the rarity of a piece, everything is quite up in the air.

All that is certain at the moment is that this space is only moving up.

Sales in the trading card marketplace alone hit approximately $900 million this past August. This is 3x what the sales were in a calendar month merely 18 months ago.

3.4 million cards were graded in August, which is up 47% year-over-year. PSA has also reinvested a whopping $200 million to improve and expand its services.

It’s no surprise that a Cooper Flagg rookie card sold for over $8 million this past month. Clearly, there is an ever-growing interest in this hobby.

With autumn sales booming, there’s no better time to get into the collectibles game than now. However, being cautious with a hint of risk is truly the name of the game.
